Into Canada's Northwest Passage

Today, you will join your fellow passengers as you board a charter flight from Toronto to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland. You will be met on arrival and transferred to the Ocean Endeavour. Lying at the head of the longest fjord in western Greenland, Kangerlussuaq 'big fjord' in Greenlandic, is appropriately named, as it is 168 km (104 miles) long and is the start of your voyage.

The west Greenland coastline is a rich mixture of fishing communities, myriad islands and complex coastal waterways. There will be an expedition stop here to enable you to explore the Greenlandic landscape.

Visit the colourful coastal town of Ilulissat and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ilulissat Icefjord by Zodiac.

In Karrat Fjord you will cruise one of Greenland's most spectacular fjords. During ice break up, narwhals and seals use the long leads created by high winds in this region to hunt the rich waters of the fjord. Time spent on deck today should result in some good wildlife sightings.

Explore Upernavik today, including the town cemetery and Old Town Museum. Weather depending, there should be fantastic views of the Davis Strait today.

Today, you land in rugged Cape York, home to countless birds and wildlife. Enjoy a tundra hike today, making the most of the beautiful landscape.

Venture into the ice-strewn waters of Smith Sound today.

Visit the small community of Aujuittuq today, home to just 165 residents. Learn about the culture and way of life in this remote outpost.

Today you will visit the National Wildlife Area of Coburg Island at the entrance to Jones Sound, home to almost 200,000 pairs of birds.

Explore Devon Island — the largest uninhabited island in the world — before a Zodiac trip through the icebergs in Croker Bay.

Arrive at Beechey Island today — the final resting place of some of the crew who travelled on the fateful 1845 Franklin expedition to open up the Northwest Passage.

Bathurst Island is home to Polar Bear Pass National Wildlife Area — a migratory route for polar bears between March and November. You will also learn about the ancient communities that once lived here.

Discover Melville Island today, first explored by the British in 1819. This is a major breeding ground for the Western High Arctic Brant — a small species of goose.

Banks Island is home to Barren-ground caribou, polar bears, musk oxen, and birds such as robins and swallows. The first grizzly/polar bear hybrid was found in the wild here in 2006.

Extending northeastward for 275 km (170 miles) from the Amundsen Gulf to Viscount Melville Sound, the Prince of Wales Strait is part of the Arctic Ocean and is now the preferred route of large vessels making the passage.

Your penultimate day on board is spent at Ulukhaktok on the west side of Victoria Island.

Arriving into Kugluktuk (Coppermine) today your cruise comes to an end. After disembarking, board a charter flight to Edmonton. Make your own way to your hotel upon arrival.

The morning is free to explore Edmonton or go shopping before making your way to the airport to board your homeward flight.
