What our specialists say...

A short trip focusing on the ancient sites around the Nile. This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors or for those looking to fit the classic sights of Egypt into a limited space of time. The first three nights are spent in Cairo, with a guided tour of the pyramids at Giza, Saqqara and Dashur. Put all this into context at Cairo’s Egyptian Museum. Then take a domestic flight to Aswan to cruise the Nile on board the M/S Sonesta St George. All meals are included and you’ll stop to visit temples and tombs, including the Valley of the Kings.

We recommend this trip for:

  • Cairo
  • Aswan
  • Luxor

Itinerary idea in detail

Open all Close all

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Day 1 Cairo

International outbound flight , Cairo

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Cairo. Arriving into Cairo, you're met at the airport by an Audley representative and driven to your accommodation by your private driver. It can take an hour to get from the airport to your hotel. As your flight most likely arrives in the early evening, we recommend you make no plans for tonight and simply relax in your hotel.

Day 2 Cairo

This morning you're met at your hotel by your private guide and driver for a full day tour of the pyramids at Giza, Saqqara and Dashur. Drive to Dashur first to visit its Bent Pyramid, one of the earliest attempts at pyramid architecture. Venture inside the Red Pyramid before moving on to see the stepped pyramid of Saqqara. Finish with the most iconic and largest pyramids at Giza. The trip takes around seven hours in total, including a stop for lunch (not included) in a cafe or restaurant recommended by your guide.

Day 3 Cairo

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore Cairo under your own steam. Cairo Museum is a definite highlight, and although it can be explored independently, you get a much better experience with a guide who can show you the lesser-known artefacts that can be easily missed. We can help you arrange a guided tour of the museum, or, alternatively, a guided tour of the souqs.

Day 4 Aswan

Cairo , Aswan

An early start for a private transfer to the airport, a short internal flight of one and a half hours, and the private transfer to board your cruise ship in Aswan. After settling in to your cabin, disembark for a guided trip to the High Dam and the Temple of Philae. The latter is a special site, a shrine to Isis: your guide will explain how UNESCO took steps to relocate it to save it from flooding. You then sail to Kom Ombo to visit the Temple of Sobek and Haroeris.

Day 5 Aswan

Today, visit the Temple of Horus in Edfu, where your guide takes you through the different halls and antechambers, explaining their significance, before you reach the inner Sanctuary of Horus. You then sail on to Esna and cross its famous lock. The rest of the day is spent sailing to Luxor - we suggest relaxing on deck and watching the rural Nile scenery pass by.

Day 6 Aswan

This morning you visit the West Bank at Luxor. In the Valley of the Kings there's the opportunity to go down into a tomb, where the hieroglyphics decorating the walls are much brighter than you'd imagine. You also visit the Temple of Hatchepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. You have the afternoon at leisure - relax on the boat, wander around Luxor's museums, or walk around the corniche.

Depending on flight times, this morning you may visit the Temples of Karnak and Luxor on Luxor's east bank after breakfast and disembarking.
