Sheep Mountain Lodge

Sheep Mountain Lodge

The USA

Sheep Mountain Lodge opened its doors to guests more than 75 years ago. Its smattering of traditional and handcrafted cabins place you in a mountain landscape that stretches away in every direction. The lodge is only a short drive from the Matanuska Glacier, the largest glacier you can reach by vehicle in Alaska, making it a convenient overnight stay before or after your visit.

The cabins, while modern in construction and amenities, have an old-fashioned, rural feel. Trails lead out almost from your front step into the surrounding mountainscape. The lodge’s restaurant opens all day every day to serve homemade dishes that make use of local bounty, such as Alaskan seafood (with good old-fashioned burgers and steaks also on the menu).

OUR OPINION:

Sheep Mountain Lodge is in a remote area over an hour's drive from the closest towns. Its cosy log cabins make a wonderful stop in the Alaskan wilderness, especially if you’re looking to explore the spectacular Matanuska Glacier.

Rooms

The lodge has a selection of classic and premier cabins, plus rooms in the guesthouse. The classic cabins give off a cosy atmosphere and have enough space to relax in. Each cabin has its own deck where you can sit out and appreciate the panoramic vistas. Authentic in feel, the cabins are equipped with modern amenities such as an en suite bathroom, coffee-maker, heating and Wi-Fi. The more spacious premier cabins also include a fully kitted-out kitchen, which is ideal for longer stays.

Location

The lodge’s location along the main road can interrupt the quiet setting, but beautiful surroundings and fresh air are in abundance here. You’re only 12 miles from the access point to the Matanuska Glacier, and outdoor activities close by include river rafting and, of course, glacier hiking. You can also pick up one of many hiking trails near the lodge.

Food and drink

The lodge’s restaurant home-cooks much of what’s on its menu, including freshly baked goods. The restaurant opens every day from 8am to 9pm to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (though it does open seasonally). Dishes make a big play of local Alaskan produce, like freshly caught wild salmon and regional wines. It also buys its supplies from local farmers and, in the case of beer, the Alaskan Brewing Company. Down the road, you have a second eating option at Long Rifle Lodge, which looks onto the Matanuska Glacier. The restaurant also doubles as the lodge’s check-in/reception area.

Facilities and activities

The lodge is on the doorstep of many outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside, from hiking to rafting to walking on the Matanuska Glacier.

Please note: Parking isn’t available outside every cabin, but the parking area is only a short distance away, with staff on hand to carry your luggage.

Accessibility

Cabin 1 (Premier Cabin) is wheelchair accessible with a ramp and spacious adapted facilities.
