Portofino Beach Resort, Cayes, Belize
Located just a 30 minute boat ride away from San Pedro in the north of Ambergris Caye, Portofino Beach Resort is a lovely peaceful retreat run by welcoming Belgian and Dutch owners - Jan and Sandra.
The hotel has just 17 rooms in total, comprised of beach cabanas, VIP suites, junior suites, colonial suites, treetop suites, one honeymoon suite (with a jacuzzi) and the two storey Portofino mansion, made up of two two-bedroom suites with a kitchenette and dining room.
The rooms are decorated in individual Belizean style with wooden floors and thatched roofs and all have sea views, air-conditioning and TV. There is a lovely bar and gourmet restaurant (a little on the expensive side) serving excellent food, a large swimming pool by the beach, and complimentary kayaks and snorkelling equipment to allow guests to take full advantage of the Belizean barrier reef located about a mile off the shore of the island.
The hotel runs regular boat trips in to San Pedro and the local water taxis also stop by every hour. Please note that this is a very peaceful hotel and can feel a little isolated in the evenings from the point of view of other dining options.
