When is the best time to visit Cuba?

The best time to visit Cuba is from December to May, during the dry season, when you can expect dry, sunny days and plenty of blue skies.

Cuba has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The dry season (December to May) sees warm, sunny days, with daytime temperatures of 26°C-31°C and 19°C-21°C at night.

The wet season begins in June. Previously, visitors to Cuba would have avoided travel entirely between August and October, when there is a risk of hurricanes. However, as interest in visiting Cuba has increased, the subsequent pressure on hotel availability means many are now prepared to run the risk of unpredictable weather.

Visiting in the wet season will still be an atmospheric experience. Rainfall happens quickly and comes down hard, but it soon clears. The humidity is higher at this time of year, with temperatures around 28°C-33°C.

Visiting Cuba in January - December

Cuba’s dry season brings the sunniest days and pleasant temperatures, making it a wonderful time to visit. Early planning for visiting Cuba is now essential year-round, but this becomes all the more important during the dry season. You should begin planning a minimum of nine months in advance for this period in general, but at least 12 months in advance if you wish to visit between December and February or over Easter.

Visiting Cuba in May - July

Although this is the official start of Cuba’s wet season, the heaviest rains do not usually arrive until August or late July. The main change during this time is a rapid increase in temperatures; particularly in Havana and Santiago.

Events & Festivals

  • Labour Day (1st May): This is a big event in Cuba, marked by a national holiday, political rallies and processions in the streets of Havana.
Trinidad, Cuba

Visiting Cuba in August - October

While this is the wettest time of year in Cuba, it is unusual to experience consecutive days of persistent heavy rain. Temperatures will be at their most humid however, and there is a higher risk of hurricanes or tropical storms. More people than ever are visiting Cuba at this time, particularly if they cannot find hotel availability in the drier months and still wish to experience the country’s beauty and unique culture before any changes come into place.
