Responsible Choice

We've hand-selected a range of tours and stays across the world that go above and beyond to be a force for good by supporting local businesses, educating staff, challenging local norms, or promoting conservation and biodiversity efforts. Your Responsible Choice helps increase the positive impact of your trip.

Chilcabamba Lodge offers simple but cosy accommodation in a stunning setting just minutes away from Cotopaxi National Park. The lodge offers excellent opportunities for active visitors to explore the beautiful scenery on foot, by bike or on horseback, before returning to the lodge for home-cooked food. If you still have room after dinner there's an outdoor fire pit where guests are welcome to make s'mores. The double cabins are comfortable and warmed by individual stoves.

Since opening, the lodge has embarked down a continuous path of learning and getting better at being sustainable. Along the way they've taken measures such as growing native flora in their gardens, composting organic waste, offering reusable water bottles to guests, as well as working with and giving back to the local communities of Cotopaxi.

Remember this is a high altitude area. Dress for all weathers, with sun cream, warm layers, waterproof jacket, scarf and hat. Walking boots or waterproof trainers are recommended. Take binoculars and a camera. Weather is always changeable but in wet season (December to April) you may particularly wish to take waterproof walking trousers. In August the winds in Cotopaxi are particularly strong.

One of the available activities at this property is horse riding. If you chose to do this, please bear in mind some key safety considerations. You should provide full and accurate information about your riding ability and experience. You should also ensure you always wear a helmet. Please ask for one if it's not automatically offered. You're responsible for your own safety at all times. This includes following all instructions and being alert to the inherent risks of being on or around horses.
