Originally built in the 15th century by Francis I as a home for his mistress, Marie Gaudin, Château de la Bourdaisière has expertly maintained its heritage while still feeling like a much-loved private home. It's set in an idyllic spot within a large, densely-wooded park not far from Chenonceau.

High, wood-beamed ceilings and thick, stone walls surround the bedrooms, which feature elegantly refined decor with classically French fabrics and furnishings. Though the château is a historical building, it has been updated to include a wellness suite, a swimming pool and a tennis court.

The property’s pride and joy is its expansive garden, where over 650 varieties of tomato are grown for use in the château's restaurant and Bar à Tomates. 

OUR OPINION:

As you enter the 15th-century Château de la Bourdaisière, you instantly feel as if you have arrived in a stately family home. It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, traditional furnishings and extensive grounds.

Rooms

Rooms and apartments are spread between the main château and its characterful outbuildings. All evoke the sensation of staying in one of the grand family homes of the Loire Valley. Elegant drapes are adorned with rich patterns and large windows fill the rooms with natural light. Many windows overlook the surrounding park and are named after people who have played a role in the château’s history. All rooms except those in the Clos Bourdaisière feature complimentary Wi-Fi. Classique and Supérieure bathrooms have a shower or bath, whereas Luxe rooms and apartments have a separate shower and bath.

Location

The château is surrounded by a large wooded park which can be explored on foot or by renting a bicycle at reception. Amboise and the main train station of the Loire Valley, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, are both around 20 minutes' drive away. The property is also at a midpoint between several of the Loire Valley’s most well-known sights, including Chenonceau, Château de Villandry and Leonardo da Vinci’s home at Clos Lucé.

Food and drink

A strong emphasis is placed on fresh local produce, and much of it is cultivated in the château's expansive farm and garden. A continental breakfast is provided in the living room or on the terrace, while an alfresco lunch at the Bar à Tomates celebrates the huge variety of tomatoes grown here. Dinner in the salon revolves around seasonal ingredients cooked using traditional methods. You can also buy some of the garden's produce from the property's small shop.

Facilities and activities

The wellness suite offers massages, facial treatments and manicures for guests. There's an outdoor pool located right next to a tennis court. You could rent a bicycle from reception to discover the many marked trails that wind around the property, or simply explore on foot.
