Built in 2009, this contemporary hotel on the banks of the Sogid River is located in the heart of the Golden Circle route.

Just a 45-minute drive east of Reykjavík, it offers 119 rooms, suites, and apartments, all of which are spaced out in buildings across the grounds for a smaller and more intimate feel. Each has modern Nordic decor, neutral hues, and modern amenities such as TVs, Wi-Fi, minibars, tea and coffee-making facilities, and en suite bathrooms. While there is no pool, all rooms have access to one of 29 hot tubs that are filled daily with geothermal waters. Elsewhere, there’s a large restaurant where you can wake up to continental breakfasts and return later for dinners that draw focus on Icelandic and international dishes made with fresh and local ingredients. There’s also an outdoor terrace for summer dining, a bar serving cocktails and wines, and live entertainment on selected nights.

This hotel is ideal for those who like the outdoors life and want to spend time glacier walking, horse riding, snowmobiling, quad biking, diving, and playing golf.

OUR OPINION:

Hótel Grímsborgir is ideal for couples, families, and small groups who love the outdoors. The numerous geothermal hot tubs are a real highlight.

The larger apartments have kitchenettes or fully-equipped kitchens and dining areas. Guests also have access to 29 geothermal hot tubs that are filled daily.

Location

Set on the banks of the Sogid River in the Grimsnes area, you’ll be in the heart of the Golden Circle route. Nearby attractions include the Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, Geysir hot springs, and Kerið crater. Reykjavík is a 45-minute drive from the hotel.

Food and drink

The buffet breakfast served at Grímsborgir restaurant includes freshly baked breads and pastries, cheeses, cold cuts, vegetables, fruits, and hot option such as sausages, bacon, and scrambled eggs. The à la carte dinner menu showcases Icelandic and international cuisine made with fresh ingredients. The hotel also has a bar offering wines and beer. Picnics can be prepared on request. 

Families

Families are well catered for in the apartments that have two, four, or five bedrooms, spacious living and dining areas, kitchenettes or fully equipped kitchens, and outdoor terraces.

Facilities and activities

While there is no spa, a small selection of treatments such as massage and acupuncture can be arranged on request. The hotel also has 29 geothermal hot tubs for guest use. The helpful staff can arrange a wealth of activities including horse riding, snowmobiling, glacier hiking, and diving. There are also three golf courses within a 20-minute drive.
