Located 14 kilometres from Alleppey, this ecofriendly resort is set in coconut palm groves leading directly to the beach. It is built in the style of a traditional fishing village, with whitewashed thatched villas scattered beneath the trees. There are plenty of relaxing places around the resort that are perfect for putting your feet up including sun loungers in the gardens overlooking the long expanse of beach, where you can see local fishermen at work.

Yoga, beach volleyball and tennis are available for the more active, and the beach is great for a walk. If you prefer to get out and about, the hotel can arrange a local excursion for you, or the naturalist can take you on a guided walk in the local area. 

Each detached air-conditioned garden villa has a small enclosed garden area, with a veranda, and is furnished in cane with terracotta tiling. The bathrooms are part-open to a small private courtyard, complete with a banana or papaya tree, and some of the villas have pools or plunge pools too.

There is an Ayurvedic centre, a large swimming pool, a bar and a small amphitheatre, where cultural shows are performed.

OUR OPINION:

This is a relaxed ecofriendly resort with a high standard of food, service and comfortable rooms. It always receives good feedback from clients.

Rooms

All accommodation is in thatched huts dotted throughout the garden. Rooms are not overly flashy but have a relaxed beachy feel to them with wicker furniture and simple furnishings. There are four different room categories. Garden rooms are spacious with a small seating area, indoor/outdoor bathrooms and private verandas. Garden Villas are similar to the Garden rooms, but have their own plunge pools within a walled courtyard. Deluxe Pool Villas have their own pools, and Suites are larger and have their own private sitting rooms as well as a pool.

Location

Set in palm-fringed gardens overlooking a long stretch of beach, Marari Beach Resort is fairly isolated and perfect for those who just want to relax for a few days. It is half an hour from the Keralan backwaters, but most guests will have already visited this area on their trip.

Food and drink

There are two restaurants as well as a beach bar at the resort. The main restaurant, Chakara, offers both continental and Keralan dishes in a buffet at lunch and dinner. There is also a seafood restaurant serving the fresh catch of the day, which is à la carte. The beach bar is a great place to have a relaxing drink during the day.

Families

Marari Beach Resort is perfect for families. There is a lovely big pool and plenty of space within the gardens for children to run around. There is also a resident naturalist who can take guests on walks in the surrounding area to spot birds and butterflies.

Honeymooners

Many honeymooners stay here at the end of their trip and the individual huts are spaced out throughout the garden to give guests privacy.

Facilities and activities

Facilities include a spa, library and tennis courts, and there is yoga and meditation available. Guests can also go on guided walks with the in-house naturalist.

Environmental and social responsibility

Part of the Clean, Green, Happy Earth group, the resort prides itself on its environmental credentials and even has its own biogas units to produce methane gas for cooking.
