Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort

Sant'Angelo

Matera, Italy

In the late 1990s, just a few years after Matera was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort was one of the very first properties to see the value in reimagining the ancient caves into luxury boutique hotels. Today the property continues to do an excellent job of preserving the cave dwellings while providing guests with stylish, comfortable accommodation. The various areas of the hotel retain the natural structure of the Sassi and sit housed throughout several different layers of stone connected by staircases.

Rooms vary from traditional cave dwellings complete with rocky stone walls, to more modern rooms with balconies and views out over the city, located in a historic building. In addition to the sleek, stylish rooms, and the excellent service, the restaurant and bar on site are the property's big draws. The restaurant is charmingly located in an ancient cave with a large terrace adjacent. The views out over the rocky, stone city of Matera illuminated in the evening make for a truly memorable meal.

OUR OPINION:

With an excellent location in the sassi, we love Sant’Angelo for its ability to offer a sleek, stylish hotel, while maintaining the historic character and charm of the caves and the area.

Rooms

Each of the 23 rooms in the hotel has its own character. Some rooms have been carved out of the caves of the Sassi and offer typical domed stone ceilings and rocky walls. Others are housed in a historic building on the piazza and follow a more modern architectural design while still retaining a boutique feel. All rooms follow the whitewashed palette typical of Matera in a classic contemporary style. Characterful design details shine through in the form of deep bathtubs, balconies with expansive views, or historic stone doorways. Each room offers something special and unique, yet all maintain modern comforts and stylish appeal.

Location

Set in the ancient caves in the Sassi of Matera area, Sant’Angelo benefits from the historic character of this area of the city. Rooms and the public area of the hotel are in several different structures on the Piazza San Pietro Cavoso. There are restaurants within walking distance, and the sights of Matera are all easily accessible.

Food and drink

The dining options at Sant’Angelo offer guests a memorable experience. The main restaurant where breakfast is served in the mornings as well as lunch and dinner, is housed in a cave structure above the hotel. Dishes focus on excellently prepared local cuisine. One of the main draws of the restaurant is the impressive terrace area with beautiful views out over the historic city of Matera. In the evening this stunning location offers an ideal spot to enjoy a romantic drink while soaking in the views.
