A historic building in the ancient heart of Sorrento, the Grand Hotel la Favorita strikes a balance between maintaining the old and championing the new.

Rooms are bright with traditional, tiled floors and a blue and white theme that runs throughout, interspersed with warm splashes of yellow. The rooftop terrace, complete with a mosaicked swimming pool, is a great spot for an evening aperitivo under the palm trees. The views from up here more than make up for the lack of sea views from the rooms, which look out to the street at the front or the gardens behind.

OUR OPINION:

The Grand Hotel la Favorita exudes an understated charm. The roof terrace is undoubtedly a highlight, but the lovely citrus and jasmine-filled gardens, spacious rooms and fantastic location make this a standout property.

Rooms

The rooms are charming, bright and classically Italian. The high ceilings have simple frescoes and the floors are paved with traditional painted tiles. Balconies have views of either the bustling streets, the church, or partial views of the sea or gardens. Rooms and suites are spacious, featuring modern electronics and a good range of amenities. The en suite bathrooms are a good size and have either a combined bath and shower or a separate walk-in shower.

Location

Although not directly on the seafront, you can get down to the port via the private elevator in a matter of minutes. To get to the main Piazza Tasso, it’s a pleasant five to ten minutes’ walk along the winding, cobbled streets lined with shops selling local delicacies.

Food and drink

The rooftop Bellavista Bar opens for a snack or light lunch and then again for evening cocktails as the sun sets over the bay. On cooler evenings, the stately Lounge Bar is a splendid indoor option. The buffet breakfast is held in the Tiffany restaurant, also open for lunch and dinner. The hotel has an additional sister restaurant, O Parruchiano, just down the road.

Facilities and activities

The inviting, mosaicked swimming pool on the roof terrace is open daily and is a real sun-trap.
