Monastero Santa Rosa

Monastero Santa Rosa

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Monastero Santa Rosa proudly showcases all the intricacies of its monastic heritage, from the original bell to enter the property and the cells of the nuns, to the courtyard style cloister and the kitchen, all of which have been expertly transformed into rooms, suites, restaurants and a relaxing spa. There’s even a confessional box, now used for decoration and feedback.

The monastery gets its name from the care and attention the nuns gave to their beautiful rose garden, which still blooms today.

OUR OPINION:

Monastero Santa Rosa showcases the charming original features of the nuns’ residence, who seem like a cherished member of the family. We highlight this hotel for its sunlit terraces, pool and spa, but also for the way it expertly achieves five-star standards of comfort and service without compromising on its origins.

Rooms

The nuns’ cells were once small, simple rooms with thick stone walls, high vaulted ceilings and heavy wooden doors enclosing them. These original features still exist today but one room comprises two or three cells to create more space for guests. All rooms have high quality linens and fabrics and blue shuttered windows which fill the room with natural light. Bathrooms are furnished with dark wood, stone, and marble and feature large, inviting bathtubs. Most have a separate shower as well. All are equipped with the exclusive Santa Maria Novella beauty products.

Location

Conca dei Marini is a small fishing town between Positano and Amalfi town, both of which you can easily reach by car or in the free shuttle bus. Most guests will arrive from Naples and then either drive to the hotel or, better still, get a boat to Amalfi and then drive. Alternatively, you can arrive by helicopter.

Food and drink

Ristorante il Refettorio has an extensive menu, using vegetables and herbs grown in their own garden and other locally sourced produce. The nuns were equally passionate about food; their homemade Sfogliatelle, a cream-filled pastry, became regionally known as the ‘Santa Rosa’. Today, it’s one of the most popular desserts on the coast. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, with an ample wine cellar.

Facilities and activities

Built on the edge of the landscaped gardens, the infinity pool appears to hang over the cliff, offering unobstructed sea views. The spa and fitness suite includes outdoor treadmills and bicycles, as well as a sauna and couples’ treatment rooms.

There are some wonderful hikes, too, especially over to Positano, where you could have lunch and then get collected by the complimentary shuttle bus.
