Nishimuraya Shogetsutei

Nishimuraya Shogetsutei

Kinosaki Onsen, Japan

The Shogetsutei is tucked away from the main town of Kinosaki in a serene woodland setting. The baths, which are one of the main draws of the hotel, are each decorated to reflect one of the four seasons. As the sister property to the Nishimuraya Honkan (located in the heart of town), the Shogetsutei offers a slightly more modern ryokan-hotel experience.

The property is a good base to experience the renowned seven hot spring bathhouses for which the area is so well known. The expansive grounds invite contemplative strolls in the spring and, during the autumn months, the surrounding foliage blazes in shades of red and orange. You can also rent your own private onsen with a view of the forest.

Rooms

Shogetsutei offers both Western and Japanese-style rooms with futon flooring. All of the Standard rooms were renovated in 2017 and now sport a clean, modern look. The Superior rooms are spacious and offer views over the grounds and surrounding forest. The Superior rooms have options available for standard, round, open-air baths, but the Keigetsu Special rooms offer a traditional sunken rock bath. The Japanese-Western style rooms offer a combination of styles with Western beds and a tatami area that is quite suitable for families.

Location

Located just on the outskirts of the town of Kinosaki Onsen, the Shogetsutei offers regular five-minute shuttles to and from the downtown area.

Food and drink

Head chef Etsunobu Takahashi crafts menus for both the Nishimuraya Honkan and Shogetsutei, retaining a high standard across both hotels. Each evening, guests are served traditional kaiseki cuisine. These meals always contain some of the regional produce that are a source of pride for the whole of Hyogo prefecture. You'll find Matsuba and Kasumi red snow crabs during the autumn and winter and Tajima wagyu beef throughout the year.

Facilities and activities

The four communal baths are divided by gender and are fed by waters from hot springs in the area. You can rent one of the three private baths, which are constructed in Japanese, Balinese and Chinese styles. Each one offers views of the surrounding forest.

During the summer, guests can make use of the open-air swimming pool in the grounds.
