Viceroy Riviera Maya

The Mayan Riviera, Mexico

Comprising just 40 luxury villas and one presidential villa, this beautiful property has a lovely location with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea from the pool and restaurant area.

It is an adults only hotel creating a wonderful calm, peaceful and relaxing environment. The beach is a lovely stretch of white sand and although there are rocks in the sea out front which means swimming directly from the beach is not really possible, they have a private pier and dock from which you can take a dip in the warm waters of the Caribbean and the pool at the hotel is wonderful.

There is a casual beachfront restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also has the excellent 'La Marea' fine dining restaurant which is open for dinner and serves a variety of innovative local and international dishes with a well-stocked wine cellar. They often have barbecue nights or chef's table theme nights in the restaurant too. A $20 taxi ride will take you to Playa del Carmen 15 minutes away if you would prefer a night out.

OUR OPINION:

Despite the cost of onsite services, this is a luxurious and peaceful beachfront hideaway offering excellent service, beautifully appointed rooms, and a full range of amenities and services.

Rooms

The luxurious villas are located throughout well-manicured tropical gardens and all, except the ocean-view villas (which are nearer the pool and more open to view), are well hidden from each other and accessed by winding paths through the property providing maximum privacy. They are all spacious and contemporary in decor combining a secluded outdoor living space with beautiful and well-appointed rooms. Villas feature a private terrace, outside shower and heated plunge pool as well as a king-sized bed or two double beds, hand stitched bed linens and state of the art media centres.

The more executive villas offer large freestanding deep-soak bathtubs, sweeping views of the jungle, beach or ocean and exclusive in room butler service.

For a really special stay we can recommend the two-storey Ocean View villa, which has double doors in the bedroom that fold out to award guests with exceptional views over the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. The separate living area provides space for relaxation with views overlooking the private garden and plunge pool leaving guests feeling like they are in their own paradise.

Location

Nestled in the tropical rainforest of Riviera Maya, near Playa del Carmen, the hotel is a stunning escape perfectly positioned to explore the white sand beaches, hidden cenotes and ancient Maya ruins. Cancun international airport is just a 40-minute drive away and the main town of Playa del Carmen can be reached in a 20-minute taxi ride.

Food and drink

The ocean comes alive in the Coral Restaurant and Bar, as the waves lap at the shore during dinner. Executive chef Carlos Zamora has created a menu based on traditional Mexican flavours and the freshest seafood.

La Marea restaurant mixes influences of traditional Mexican home cooking with high-end Mediterranean flair and is one of the best places to watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea. The Library lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a signature cocktail, apéritif or a delicious dessert to complement the fare at La Marea. There are also tequila and ceviche tastings on offer to educate guests on the spirit's history and drinking methods. Alongside the tequila tastings, there are a variety of cooking lessons on offer to showcase true Mexican flavours and teach guests how to recreate their favourite holiday dish at home.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has an amazing spa with a wide range of treatments available, that incorporate natural ingredients and ancient Mayan techniques from the Riviera Maya. The fitness centre is hidden in the rainforest, with free weights and a variety of machines available for guests to use. There are also yoga, meditation, resistance and circuit training sessions available.

Many beach and water activities can also be arranged for guests, such as ocean scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, yacht hire, and cenote dives. Land tours on offer range from ATV experiences, golf at the El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Course and horse riding along the beach.
