Schoeman's Safaris, Skeleton Coast, Namibia

Our rating: First Class

Guided largely by the Schoeman brothers it is hard to find better guides in Africa. Combining light aircraft flights, trusty Land Rovers (with seats on the roof) and on foot you’ll explore the Skeleton Coast’s fragile ecosystem.

You’ll often stop to study plants, the smaller animals and their unique adaptations. Then there’s the chance to slide down roaring dunes, walk along totally inaccessible beaches and explore the dune sea. It is impossible not to learn a huge amount about this fascinating area.

Each night you’ll stay in a different camp, of which there are three. Kuidas Camp is situated above a freshwater spring in the Huab River Valley. Purros Camp is located on the banks of the dry Hoarusib River and Kunene Camp, as the name suggests, is located on the banks of the Kunene River.

All are tiny and they are not luxurious in any way – this safari isn’t about accommodation. More often than not you’ll dine under a tree. Hot bucket showers will be filled for you and simple beds are in dome tents. Finally, there’s always a fire and plenty of tales (that grow taller by the day) to hear beside it.
