Quinta Nova

Quinta Nova

Douro Valley, Portugal

Well-known in Portugal for its highly-respected winery, Quinta Nova is set in a converted 18th-century manor with its own tiny chapel. A stay feels more like a visit to a beautifully-restored farmhouse than a hotel, with the surrounding gardens offering panoramic views across terraced hillsides of vineyards and the precipitous slopes of the Duoro River valley.

The hotel is located just half an hour from Pinhão and about two hours from Porto and has 11 rooms spread between the main manor house and an annex. All rooms are fresh and bright with comfy white linens and floral touches. Large windows allow in plenty of natural light and offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

The hotel also features a museum dedicated to the history of port production and a stay includes a complimentary winery tour. You can also explore the surrounding valley by taking one of several well-marked hiking paths. After a day of exploring, there’s an outdoor pool to relax in, while the main restaurant and more casual tapas bar serve a range of refined regional dishes.

OUR OPINION:

Rooms

Rooms are classic and comfortable with a traditional character that creates the feeling of staying in a family home while still providing modern amenities such as air conditioning, TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi. Views look out over the Douro Valley or surrounding countryside, with some rooms offering access onto the central terrace. Though room decor is traditional, the bathrooms are modern with granite finishes, and most offer a bathtub and shower.

Location

Though it enjoys a secluded location surrounded by terraced vineyards, Quinta Nova is just over half an hour away from Pinhão and about two hours from Porto by car.

Food and drink

The highly-regarded hotel restaurant hosts a buffet breakfast each morning and dinner each night, which can be selected from either a tasting or an à la carte menu. The ambitious dishes reflect regional specialities and local ingredients but have a modern style. In fine weather the restaurant opens out onto the main terrace. There is also a small, informal tapas bar.

Facilities and activities

The small hotel pool overlooks the terrace and offers sweeping views.
