Amakhala Bush Lodge
Amakhala Bush Lodge, Eastern Cape Game Areas, South Africa
Amakhala is a collection of game lodges still owned by the same families of English settlers who arrived in this part of the world over 150 years ago. The 18,000ha reserve encompasses spectacular scenery around the meandering Bushman's River, with its surrounding cliffs and rolling plains.
The four rooms have thatched roofs and canvas walls with en-suite bathroom with stone bath and outdoor shower, air-conditioning and a private deck with plunge pool. Each room overlooks the nearby waterhole where guests can watch visiting wildlife between game drives. Meals are served in the main thatched tent and there is a boma and sitting area to relax in. The lodge has a very private feel to it and a great location in the bush.
The reserve provides superb game viewing with all of the 'Big 5' present. Cheetah and elephant sightings can be especially memorable here. In addition, there are vast herds of antelope, wildebeest and giraffe and the birdlife is prolific. An added bonus is that the Eastern Cape is malaria-free.
