Ellerton

Kandy, Sri Lanka

Owned by a Swiss and Sri Lankan couple who have taken over this carefully renovated colonial property, Ellerton was originally built over a century ago to house the manager of a tea plantation.

The property is set in picturesque surroundings with spacious rooms, local textiles and traditional planters’ furniture. Situated in the hills high above Kandy, it affords wonderful views of the surrounding lush green landscape.

The friendly service and homely atmosphere make this an excellent base for exploring Kandy and the surrounding area.

OUR OPINION:

In our opinion Ellerton is Sri Lanka’s best boutique property, thanks to its first-class service, views of the surrounding countryside and welcoming feel.

Rooms

A small collection of nine spacious rooms make up the accommodation at Ellerton. Each has a distinct style and features a large en suite bathroom, with some able to be connected for larger groups or families. The rooms are divided between the main house, the Valley House and the Aurora Bungalow, each of which has a cosy communal lounge, creating a home away from home feel. The Valley House also has a large shared veranda which makes a lovely place to relax in the shade. In addition, there are two self-contained rooms set within the gardens, each with their own sitting rooms and balconies looking out over the valley and the Alagalla Mountains.

Location

Ellerton sits in the hills overlooking Kandy, a city of contrasts where modern conveniences meet ancient temples. The city is a 30-minute drive away and there are a number of walking trails within the surrounding countryside. For those who would prefer to appreciate their surroundings in comfort, the infinity pool looks down over the valley.

Food and drink

Ellerton has two in-house chefs who cook local and international fusion food, with the menu varying each day. Breakfast can be enjoyed at any time on the shady veranda and consists of Sri Lankan fruits, cereals and cooked food. All alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, tea and coffee are included in your stay. Retired professional flautist, Tilak plays traditional Sri Lankan music by the pool during sunset and dinner service at least once during each guest's stay.

Families

For families, Ellerton has two rooms in the main house with an interconnecting twin room and the Aurora Bungalow — a one bedroom suite with sleeping space for children in the living room. Family members of all ages can enjoy bike rides around the grounds, play table tennis, volleyball or badminton, or relax in the main lounge, which has games and a TV. Families will enjoy watching The Jungle Book during the 'cinema under the stars' experience, offered when weather permits.

Honeymooners

Honeymoon couples can book one of the Garden rooms, which have a private balcony from which you can enjoy the glow of fireflies in the evening.

Facilities and activities

Activities at the Ellerton include an Orange Field Tea Factory tour for an insight into tea making and guided walks into the Hantana range or Loolkandura Tea Estate. Guests can also enjoy yoga lessons, Ayurvedic treatments and consultations with an Ayurvedic doctor. Facilities include a pool, volleyball/badminton court, table tennis table and tranquil gardens. Weather permitting, a 'cinema under the stars' experience is available.

Local excursions

During your stay at Ellerton, we'd recommend visits to Kandy Botanical Gardens, a local tea factory, the Temple of the Tooth and Kandy itself.
