Housed in a 14th-century building once operated by nuns and monks as a cloister guesthouse, the Hotel Interlaken is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the Alpine town of Interlaken. The large white building, with its green shutters, striped awnings and filigreed iron balconies, combines old world stateliness with Swiss mountain charm.

The hotel sits in the heart of the resort town, on well-tended grounds where old trees spread their branches. Just a five-minute walk from the train station, its location also allows you to easily access Interlaken’s Japanese Garden, churches, shopping and cafés.

Whitewashed stone walls form the basis of the quirky interior, with modern-patterned carpets throughout the lobby and hallways offsetting the medieval details of the original structure. Renovated meeting rooms, one of which was once a courtroom, add to the feeling of the building’s history.

A wide range of rooms is available, some of which retain original stone walls. Unfinished pine walls are evident throughout, giving the rooms a rustic yet comfortable feel.

The Restaurant Taverne serves traditional Swiss cuisine along with a large selection of wines, while the Kloster Lounge and Bar serves cocktails, wines and local beer.

OUR OPINION:

As one of the oldest buildings in Interlaken and the resort’s first hotel, Hotel Interlaken has a long history of caring for guests. Now family-owned, it provides personal service and a comfortable stay at good value.

Rooms

All the rooms at Hotel Interlaken have knotty-pine walls that give them a warm atmosphere, whether you’re in one of the single rooms or a suite. Double, triple, and even quadruple rooms are available. The latter have bunk beds cleverly built into the pine walls, as well as a seating area and a balcony. The Junior Suites are larger with separate seating areas, while the special Mendelssohn and Lord Byron Junior Suites include timbered ceilings and furniture appropriate to the historical periods of their namesakes.

All rooms have showers, internal cooling systems, tea and coffee facilities, minibars and Wi-Fi, though only some rooms have bathtubs. 

Location

The hotel is right in the middle of Interlaken, which makes it easy to walk to the town’s shops, cafés and parks. The train station is a five-minute walk away, connecting you to the attractions in the larger area. The Japanese Garden is right outside, and the restaurant’s stone terrace overlooks its tranquil ponds and paths.

  • Restaurant Taverne is the main on-site restaurant, serving Swiss cuisine for lunch and dinner with vegetarian and vegan options.
  • A more informal lounge bar, Kloster Lounge offers pre-dinner drinks and late-night cocktails.
  • Buffet breakfast and light lunches are available.
  • In warmer weather, the restaurant has a covered terrace that fronts the Japanese Garden.
