Yogyakarta and Borobudur

Location: Yogyakarta and Borobudur

Yogyakarta

The city, which is usually referred to as ‘Jogja’, is the most popular destination for those visiting Java and is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area including the ancient relics of Borobudur and Prambanan. Jogja is known as the cultural capital of Java and as such has a multitude of worthwhile places to visit, most of which are conveniently found in the walled Kraton in the old town.

Lively streets and markets surround the majestic sultan’s palace, where attendants stand in customary dress and regular performances showcase traditional orchestras and shadow puppeteers. One of the most famous performances is the Ramayana ballet performed during the summer months with the Prambanan temple as a backdrop.

Old houses, museums and handicraft shops dot the city, demonstrating its reputation as the art capital of Indonesia with batik, woodcarvings, paintings and silverwork among the crafts on offer.

Borobudur

Close to Yogyakarta is the vast pyramidal structure of Borobudur, one of Southeast Asia’s greatest religious relics.

Built between AD 750 and 850, little is known about its early history before it fell into disuse and lay buried for centuries under layers of volcanic ash. It was only in the early 19th century that it was rediscovered and not until the 20th century that it was restored by the Dutch.

Hundreds of Buddha images stare impassively out over the plains, but even more enthralling are the startlingly detailed galleries and terraces that lead up to its central stupa, telling tales of ancient gods and immortalising long-resolved battles.

Phoenix Hotel

Accommodation: Phoenix Hotel

This colonial style hotel offers the facilities and comfort of a modern hotel while maintaining the traditions of the past. Many of the Deluxe rooms and the Executive suites offer private balconies overlooking the courtyard pool and are furnished in a modern style with local touches. The remainder of the 144 rooms are clean and functional.

The Paprika restaurant specialises in Asian fusion cooking while the 1918 terrace bar overlooks an open-air courtyard and the trendy Vino wine bar features nightly entertainment. The pool and restaurant are located in elegant shady courtyards and the whole hotel is so peaceful that it is difficult to believe you are in the middle of such a vibrant city. The small spa is ideal to come back to after a sunrise visit to Borobudur.
