On the beach - 8 days
With the charm and character of a small, local hotel but many of the facilities of a larger resort, Paradise Sun offers great value for money as well as a superb location on the quiet end of a dazzling beach.
Hidden away at the end of Anse Volbert, one of the Seychelles' most magical strands, Paradise Sun is set between powder-soft sands and junglecovered hills. It is built with local materials in a time-honoured, rustic style and has an authentic village charm, while inside the decor is cosy and stylishly traditional.
The atmosphere too is relaxed and sociable with evening entertainment on most nights and a large selection of activities to choose from. There's kayaking, windsurfing and snorkelling, a weekly sunset cruise and an on-site dive centre so you can explore the immaculate underwater world. But what makes Paradise Sun really stand out is its unique location, hidden away in peace and tranquillity yet within an easy walk of local bars and restaurants so you have the option to retreat and unwind or get out and explore, a rare find in the Seychelles.
Dark wooden floors, exposed stone walls and large sliding doors leading to spacious decks give the 80 rooms a delightful Creole character. The ten deluxe rooms are slightly larger and ideal for families.
Before the beach - 4 days
As its name suggests, Bird Island is home to vast numbers of seabirds as well as visiting species, including sooty terns, fairy terns and grey plovers. The variety of other forms of wildlife is equially rich with over 20 giant tortoises, many species of indigenous and endemic plants, dolphins, whales, green turtles and hawksbill turtles. Take a walk with the resident conservationist, snorkel and kayak or simply relax on the soft white sands of the beach.
Set on a private island, Bird Island Lodge is one of our favourite ecolodges. Simple, rustic but with a stunning setting, the 24 bungalows have a spacious veranda, while the lodge’s small farm provides food for guests.
80 rooms, 2 restaurants, 1 pool
Paradise Sun is a warm and friendly boutique hotel tucked in at the end of the stunning Cote D’or beach. Set in tropical gardens abundant with palm trees and tropical flowers, the low-rise wooden buildings are in keeping with the traditional Seychellois style.
The St Pierre restaurant, located on the beach with sand on the floor, has a fun and relaxed evening atmosphere and the hotel is conveniently within walking distance of local restaurants.
The wide beach with soft white sand is very picturesque and lined with palm trees while the resort also offers a large range of activities from volleyball to kayaking, snorkelling and an on-site dive centre.
Paradise Sun welcome families but please note there are no specific children’s facilities. However, if there are several children in the resort at the same time they often organise activities for them.
This small hotel has plenty to offer guests whilst maintaining an intimate atmosphere and a rustic island feel. The long beach is stunningly beautiful and has plenty of sun loungers with the palm trees also offering shade from the hot sun. This is an excellent choice for any travellers who would like an option of local restaurants close to the hotel.
The 80 rooms are split into just two different categories at Paradise Sun, Superior and Deluxe. Rooms are set in two storey, wooden buildings that stretch through the gardens along the beachfront in semi-circle formation.
At 42m2, the Deluxe rooms are larger than the Superior rooms and are all set on the ground floor with a sea view terrace.
These 32m2 rooms are set on the ground or first floor with a balcony or patio offering sea views. They are equipped with a shower only (no bath).
Activities, diving & excursions
Paradise Sun offers a great range of activities and facilities with much more choice than most of the hotels on Praslin. Water sports include snorkelling, body boards, kayaks and paddle boards. In addition there is also volleyball, swing ball, boules, table tennis and bicycles to hire.
The hotel also runs a complimentary sunset cruise weekly for guests as well as nature walks twice a week and days with Creole inspired activities.
The hotel has an on-site dive centre who offer introductory dives in their training pool as well as PADI certification courses. There are a range of dive sites for all levels from within less than an hour’s boat journey and some as close as 5 minutes away by boat.
Food & drink
The hotel’s main restaurant, St Pierre, is set right at the beachfront and serves a la carte lunch and snacks along with a buffet dinner with a theme that changes nightly. With your feet set in the sand and the sound of the sea next to you as you eat, this open air restaurant has a relaxed island vibe. There is also evening entertainment in the form of a live band on several evenings.
The other restaurant is found next to the pool and main lobby serving breakfast and afternoon tea.
The small and rustic spa is tucked away towards the back of the hotel among the trees. They have two single treatment rooms with separate outdoor shower area as well as one double room. The therapists are trained in Bali with the spa offering a range of Balinese and traditional massages as well as manicures and pedicures.
Location: Bird Island
On the edge of the Seychelles Bank, 105 kilometres northwest of Mahé, Bird Island is as its name suggests fabulous for birds.
Sooty terns of Bird Island
In the southeast trade wind, around 800,000 pairs of sooty terns nest on the northern tip of the island. Hawksbill turtles come to the beaches and the coral reefs are rich in marine life.
The island is surrounded by sandy beaches, backed by coconut palms that shelve gently to turquoise waters. There are plenty of activities on Bird Island, including walking, snorkelling, diving and boat trips.
Bird Island Lodge
Accommodation: Bird Island Lodge
On the southern side of the island Bird Island Lodge is friendly and relaxed, with 24 comfortable bungalows overlooking the beach.
The interiors are spacious and airy, with four poster beds, ceiling fans, living area and en-suite bathrooms. Each has a large veranda and is a short distance from the dining room which serves excellent Creole cuisine.
There are plenty of activities on Bird Island including walking, snorkelling, diving and boat trips. You can of course, enjoy all the birds. Overall, Bird Island is an idyllic spot and ideal for the nature lover.
We recommend a stay of a minimum of three nights.
Day by day
Today you will board your overnight flight to the Seychelles.
On arrival in Mahe you will be met by our representative and shown to the domestic terminal for your 30 minute light aircraft flight to Bird Island. There should be great views of some of Seychelles' islands and coral reefs from the plane so make sure you have your camera ready.
You will be staying at Bird Island Lodge for the next three nights. A relaxed eco lodge it offers a simple, tranquil getaway with a real Robinson Crusoe feel.
This private island resort is a nature lover's paradise with incredible wildlife and spectacular birdlife. The lodge has an excellent nature expert who can take you round the island to see some of the amazing wildlife including some rare species of birds, giant tortoises and hawksbill turtles.
There is great snorkelling with plenty of marine life at the reef just off Hirondelle Beach and the hotel has snorkelling equipment as well as kayaks. You may even be lucky enough to be joined by turtles or dolphins.
A last morning to explore Bird Island or relax on the beautiful beach before catching a light aircraft flight back to Mahe.
Our representative will meet you from the flight and escort you to check in for the scenic 20 minute hopper flight to the island of Praslin. At Praslin you will be met by your driver and taken to Cote D'Or Beach by private transfer.
You should arrive in the early afternoon giving you time to settle in and perhaps take a stroll along the beautiful white sand beach.
Today is your first full day at leisure on Praslin. Cote D'Or Beach is one of the best on the island so you may like to simply relax and enjoy it. However the sleepy island of Praslin is worth exploring further. Perhaps hire a car to see more at your own pace, stopping at deserted beaches or small local restaurants.
The waters surrounding the islands are excellent for diving and snorkelling and if you'd like to make the most of this, a boat trip is a great way to do this and see some of the other islands.
Today you might like to explore the lush inland landscape of the island with a visit to the Vallee du Mai. This world heritage site has a collection of rare plants including the coco de mer palm.
The quiet island of La Digue is only a short ferry ride away and has a very different character to Praslin so it's worth considering a day trip. Most people get around by bike and inland you'll see beautiful birds and giant tortoises while at the coast white sand beaches are scattered with granite boulders.
Days 10 - 11
Today your driver will collect you from your hotel for a private transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
