This museum is a fascinating overview of the accident and its aftermath. First to the scene of the accident were the firefighters, so it is particularly poignant that the museum is housed in an old fire station.
Kyiv-Pecherska Lavra Excursion
Kyiv-Pecherska Lavra Excursion, Ukraine
Positioned above the Dnipro River, the Kyiv-Pecherska Lavra (monastery) was founded in 1051 and is a stunning site. Initially dug out of a series of caves, the monastery subsequently flourished above ground too, with a stunning collection of gold-domed churches.
Regarded by many Russian Orthodox believers as the spiritual home of the Russian Orthodox church, the monastery is flourishing once more today. You will be shown around the beautiful above-ground buildings, as well as the cave complex, where the mummified bodies of the monastery's founders can be seen. The caves can get very busy with pilgrims, with long queues to enter, and the monks sometimes turn tourists away. Also, there is no electric light - you take a candle to light your way.
