What our specialists say...

Your tour will begin in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, one of the last remaining areas of primary lowland rainforest in Costa Rica. A guided tour of the nearby La Selva tropical research station offers the chance to explore the many miles of forest trails where 448 species of bird have been recorded to date, including the chestnut woodpecker, snowy cotinga and white ringed fly catcher. From here you travel to the verdant Turrialba region. Over 450 species have been recorded from the diverse habitats within the area and you could hire an expert guide who will assist your birdwatching. Your trip continues on to the tranquil heights of the San Gerardo de Dota Cloudforest, where the prize is to try and catch a glimpse of the shimmering turquoise wings of the resplendent quetzal. Revered by the Aztec and Mayan civilisations, these beautiful birds can be seen year-round in San Gerardo, attracting enthusiasts from all over the globe. Finish your trip in the wild and beautiful Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica's remote jewel in the crown for wildlife. Scarlet macaws are frequently seen in this area, and you can also arrange birdwatching tours in search of honeycreepers, tanagers and the spectacular white crested coquette.
