Sumiyoshi Ryokan, Takayama, Japan

This traditional, riverside ryokan offers the visitor to Takayama a taste of bygone Japan. The owners have kept much of the original style from the time the ryokan was built at the start of the last century, and have filled it with artifacts and objects representing traditional Japanese life. In keeping with many ryokan there is a beautifully tended Japanese garden to enjoy, and the riverside location makes a pleasant base from which to explore the town. The hosts are tremendously friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home, serving fantastic food as well.
