Golden Eagle luxury train

Moscow, Russia

The Golden Eagle travels throughout Russia, but its best-known journey is along the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok. Its high levels of service and plush interiors hark back to the bygone era of rail travel, and it's by far the most comfortable way to experience this epic journey. The train varies in length depending on occupancy. However, you'll always find its elegant bar and restaurant carriages, where evening briefings and on-board lectures on local history and culture also take place.

Guest cabins vary in size and layout, but all are en suite and have a safe, air conditioning and Wi-Fi access. Small groups are taken on tours of the local area at each stop, so you're able to experience some of the more remote areas of Russia while learning about them from knowledgeable guides.

We believe this is the most comfortable way to visit parts of Russia that would otherwise be hard to reach. The benefit of having guides on board puts your journey into context, and the levels of service are unmatched along this route.

There are three room categories: Silver, Gold and Imperial. All have a personal safe, DVD/CD player with LCD screens and remote controlled air conditioning and heating. The en suite facilities for the Silver category are set up as a wet room, but for the Gold and Imperial cabins you have an enclosed shower. Those staying in the Imperial cabin also have the additional benefit of a private guide in selected cities, laundry services and in-cabin dining should you wish.

Each morning while you're at breakfast, the rooms are changed to their day-time layout which includes comfortable upright seating, and changed back to their bed set-up in the evening.

During the journey across Russia you visit Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulaanbaatar and Vladivostok in Russia's far east. Other routes include the Trans-Siberian BAM (Baikal-Amur Magistral) Explorer, which takes you to some of Russia's far eastern highlights, and the Trans-Mongolia Express, which travels along the Trans-Siberian Railway and across Mongolia, finishing in the country's capital city, Ulaanbaatar.

Food and drink

Breakfast is served daily in the train's restaurant car, with a buffet and daily specials available. Lunch and dinner are taken both in the restaurant car and off the train at local restaurants, depending on your itinerary that day. The local restaurants vary from luxury restaurants in Moscow to a local family's danche (summerhouse) in the countryside outside Irkutsk.

There's also a bar carriage where you can enjoy complimentary drinks while being serenaded by the on-board pianist. The drinks available depend on the class of cabin you're staying in.

Facilities and activities

At each stop along the journey there are shared, guided excursions with a local guide. In many cases you're given two activity options for the day, which you can decide on the evening before at the daily briefing. Private guides are arranged in some locations along the journey for those staying in the Imperial cabins.

During the extended periods of time spent on the train you have the opportunity to take Russian lessons, attend talks on Russian history and the Trans-Siberian Railway, and watch films related to your journey. There are also daily yoga classes taken on and off the train depending on where you are each day.
