Day 1 Ruhengeri

Kigali , Ruhengeri

On arrival into Kigali airport you will be met by a private driver and transferred to Ruhengeri where you will be based for the next few nights. This is a beautiful drive through rolling hills and small farming villages and takes around two hours. You will be taken to your Lodge in the mountains and the rest of the day can be spent relaxing at the hotel and enjoying the spectacular views over the Virunga Volcanoes.

Day 2 Ruhengeri

Volcanoes National Park , Ruhengeri

After breakfast you will set off to track the golden monkeys in the Volcanoes National Park. This will be a completely different but just as rewarding experience to tracking the gorillas. You will track the monkeys with a guide through the forest of the Volcanoes National Park and you will spend an hour with them once you find them. The walk is generally easier than the trek to the gorillas, although this depends on the monkeys movements. There are two habituated troops of golden monkeys, both of which have around 80 members in the family. They are incredibly lively, so can be quite hard to photograph until they settle down or go into a clearing, but are fascinating to watch leaping from tree to tree!

Day 3 Kigali

Ruhengeri , Kigali

Today you will travel from Ruhengeri back to Kigali, a journey of around two hours. On arrival you can enjoy a city tour — the GIS Genocide Memorial Museum is well worth visiting if you` re interested in learning more about the history of the genocide and how the country has rebuilt itself since then. In the afternoon you will be taken to the Kigali Serena for an overnight stay.

Day 4 Karatu

Kigali , Lake Manyara Airport , Lake Manyara National Park , Karatu

This morning you have a very early start as your flight from Kigali to Lake Manyara in Tanzania leaves Kigali at 0630. You will arrive in Tanzania four hours later and on arrival your private guide/driver will be waiting for you. Together you will set off for Lake Manyara National Park, where you can enjoy game-drives for the day. You will have a picnic lunch with you to enjoy at midday and can spend your time exploring this small but beautiful national park. The flamingos on the lake are a classic East African sight, and the other wildlife here includes buffalo, zebra and if you` re lucky, you may see a lion or leopard. You will leave the park in the afternoon and be driven up the Rift Valley escarpment to the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Day 5 Karatu

Karatu

You will have a day of game viewing in Ngorongoro Crater - when I was last there I was lucky enough to see three out of the ten resident black rhinos which live on the crater floor, as well as large prides of lion, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and hyena.

Karatu , Serengeti National Park

Today you will depart from the Ngorongoro Crater for the Serengeti National Park, passing Masai bomas on the way, and driving through the Nawab gate into the park. Day 7 Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

Today is your first full day on safari and you will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives. The wildlife in the Serengeti is some of the best in East Africa so be sure to tell your guide if there is something you are particularly interested in. He can make sure you are in the right area.

Day 8 Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

Another day on safari in the Serengeti - you can spend your time exploring the very different regions of this vast park with your driver-guide according to what wildlife you've already seen on your safari thus far. The birdlife in the Serengeti is also spectacular, with a variety of different bustards, the colourful lilac-breasted rollers and the shimmering wings of the superb starlings which are just as fascinating as the mammals!
