Built in 1687 as a private home, Prestonfield House has a long and distinguished past intertwined with Scotland’s political history. This heritage is evident throughout, reflected in antique furniture and portraits of the house’s ancestors and famous guests. The house is decorated in vibrant shades and lavish fabrics, and the service levels are exceptional. The hotel’s restaurant, Rhubarb, is excellent, and afternoon tea can be served in any of the hotel’s intimate and individually decorated rooms.
The house sits within extensive grounds just beneath Arthur’s Seat, giving it a peaceful, secluded atmosphere though it’s only a ten-minute drive to the heart of the city. A small herd of Highland cows graze the grounds, and it’s not unusual to see red deer.

Rooms
Rooms and suites are glamorous, each individually decorated in rich shades with antique furniture, lavish fabrics and eccentric knick-knacks. All rooms are fully fitted with luxurious modern conveniences including TVs, minibars and complimentary Wi-Fi. The suites have separate living and sleeping rooms, and some have two bathrooms. Views vary from overlooking Arthur’s Seat, the hotel’s gardens and parkland, the adjacent golf course, Holyrood Park and the ruins of nearby Craigmillar Castle.
Location
Prestonfield House is situated beneath Arthur’s Seat, accessed through a quiet, residential part of Edinburgh. The hotel is surrounded by its own parkland, which gives it the feeling of a countryside manor, yet it’s only a ten to fifteen-minute drive from the heart of the city.
Food and drink
Rhubarb is one of Edinburgh’s top restaurants and is owned and run by the creator of the Witchery (another renowned restaurant in Edinburgh). It offers a sumptuous breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner menu, and uses locally sourced, artisan produce. Its name stems from Prestonfield House being the place where rhubarb was first successfully produced in Scotland, back in the 18th century.
