Day 1 Seattle

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Seattle. On arrival in Seattle make your own way to your downtown hotel. The remainder of the day is free to relax. You could head to Kerry Park for a view of the iconic Seattle skyline and the distant Mount Rainier - a sight that's particularly impressive at sunset.

Seattle

Spend a day exploring Seattle. Stand at the top of the Space Needle or the quieter Sky View Observatory at the Colombia Center for panoramic views over the city. Take the monorail around the downtown area, learn about the history of old Seattle in Pioneer Square and see its abandoned underground streets, or wander around bustling Pike Place Market, home to hundreds of food and arts and crafts vendors. There are also lots of museums to explore, including the EMP (Experience Music Project) Museum, which has a collection of film props and pop music memorabilia, and Chihuly Gardens and Glass, where you can learn about and see the work of glass sculptor Dale Chihuly.

Make your own way to your nearest car hire depot, where your car will be ready to collect. All insurances, road maps and a sat-nav are included. You then head two hours west to the wilderness of Olympic National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can spend the rest of the day exploring the park's different ecosystems, strolling through ancient forests, valleys and wildflower meadows.

Spend the day relaxing at the foot of the mountains amid the tranquillity of Lake Crescent. Activity options here include kayaking, boating, hiking and biking as you explore the driftwood-strewn beaches and moss-draped rainforests. Search for the distinctive red crystals found in the sand of Ruby Beach, or follow walking trails through Hoh Rainforest, looking out for wildlife such as Roosevelt elk.

Your journey to Victoria takes around four hours, including an hour and a half ferry ride over to Vancouver Island from Port Angeles. Driving along the rugged Pacific Coast, you can make stops to take in the views en route. While on board the ferry, keep a lookout for orcas in the water. Arriving into Victoria, the capital of the Canadian province of British Columbia, you'll make the short drive to your hotel in the downtown area. The rest of the day is free to explore the town with its range of shops, street performers and quaint market square. You could also take a stroll along the harbour.

Explore the grand public buildings and museums of Victoria and perhaps visit the highly regarded Butchart Gardens. This afternoon, drive 40 minutes to Swartz Bay to catch the hour and a half ferry ride over to Tsawwassen on British Columbia's mainland. It's then a drive of around an hour to Vancouver. After checking into your hotel, you have the rest of the day free to explore the city. Browse the shops of Robson Street or visit the Museum of Anthropology to learn about the area's First Nations heritage.

Enjoy a day discovering the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver. You could go cycling through Stanley Park to admire its collection of totem poles, relax on one of the city's nine beaches, explore the tea shops and markets of Canada's largest Chinatown or walk through the historic streets of Gastown. You could also take a scenic seaplane flight for a bird's-eye view over the city and its beautiful coastline.

Vancouver , Kamloops

Drive five hours east to Kamloops in the heart of British Columbia. The scenery varies as you follow the mighty Fraser River and pass great canyons as you make your way to the grasslands of the interior. After arriving at your hotel, you can spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the town.

Leave the arid canyon lands and drive past Wells Gray Provincial Park and Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, before crossing into the province of Alberta and entering the town of Jasper. The journey takes around five hours, passing four different mountain ranges, so make sure you plan in time for a few photo stops. Once you arrive at your hotel, you can spend the rest of the day taking in the striking natural scenery surrounding Jasper. Depending on the time of your arrival you could take the SkyTram up to the summit of Whistler's Mountain for fantastic panoramas over the mountainous landscape.

Jasper National Park awaits your discovery today. Enjoy the peaceful turquoise lakes and the towering mountains of Jasper National Park through hiking, kayaking or canoeing. Take some time to wander around this smart frontier town, and take a boat ride over to Spirit Island in the heart of Maligne Lake for some of the best views in the park, with snow-capped mountains and evergreens surrounding the lake's distinctive blue waters.

Continue your journey through the magnificent Rocky Mountains as you drive five hours south to Banff, the town at the heart of Canada's oldest national park of the same name. Along the way, you'll drive from low forested valleys up to the treeline, giving you views across the Rockies' valleys, mountains and fir forests. You should also look out for wildlife such as elk, ptarmigans, coyotes, deer and black and grizzly bears.

Take some time to enjoy all of the spectacular scenery that lies in Banff National Park. The Cave and Basin, Upper Hot Springs and Lake Minnewanka are all must-see attractions. The gondola up to Sulphur Mountain also gives spectacular views of the park. Activities such as hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting and canoeing are all on offer, helping you to make the most of your time in the park.

Banff , Calgary

Departing Banff, the mountains gradually give way to the foothills and before long you're driving through the flat lands on the edge of the prairies. Ranches dot the highway and soon you'll see the city of Calgary looming on the horizon. The drive takes around an hour and a half. After arriving at your hotel, you could head to the Calgary Tower for a bird's-eye view of the city and visit the Glenbow Museum to learn about the area's First Nations culture. This evening you may wish to enjoy the many excellent restaurants and nightlife in the city.

Day 14 Glacier National Park

Calgary , Glacier National Park

Leave the skyscrapers of Calgary behind and head three and a half hours south, passing through 'Cowboy Country' and the flat prairie lands of Alberta. After crossing the border back into the USA, you enter the iconic Glacier National Park in Montana. After settling into your hotel, you may have time to follow one of the park's shorter walking trails, looking out for wildlife such as elk, bighorn sheep, bobcats and black bears.

Enjoy a day exploring Glacier National Park, undoubtedly Montana's star attraction. Here 2,000 lakes, a maze of rivers and a vast expanse of glacier-packed peaks combine to form a monumental wilderness and wildlife haven. You could hike some of the trails around the park, enjoy the thrill of white water rafting or take the Red Bus Tour aboard a vintage bus, which takes you through some of the park's key areas and scenic spots.

Glacier National Park , Spokane

Leave Glacier National Park and head through the hills and forests of western Montana and Idaho to the city of Spokane in Washington State. The journey takes around five and a half hours, but is a scenic one as you pass through several forests, stopping along the way to take photographs and enjoy the scenery.

Travel three and a half hours west from Spokane to the historic mining town of Winthrop. The town enjoys a magnificent location on the scenic Cascade Loop near North Cascades National Park. Set in the Methow Valley, you can go walking in search of some of the area's wildlife, which includes mule deer, otters, coyotes and a variety of birdlife.

Relax in Winthrop and soak up its Old West atmosphere. We definitely suggest spending most of today exploring the spectacular mountain scenery, whether hiking, biking, fishing or golfing.

Day 19 Mount Rainier National Park

Head north for five and a half hours, skirting forests, mountains and lakes, to arrive in the suitably named Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park. The afternoon is free to go walking or hire a bicycle or canoe to explore this beautiful mountain setting.

Mount Rainier National Park , Seattle , International return flight

Spend this morning exploring Mount Rainier National Park further before driving two and a half hours back to Seattle this afternoon. Here you can drop off your hire car before making your own way to the airport in time for your onward flight.
