  • Birds

Zambia offers the full range of fascinating, colourful birdlife you’d expect to see on safari, with a range of water based birds in the Lower Zambezi and Kafue National Parks. The Bangweulu Wetlands are one of the few places on the planet where you can see the impressive Shoebill Stork.

  • Boat trips

An evening cruise on the Zambezi in Livingstone and game viewing from Kafue’s Lufupa River are wonderfully relaxing, but best of all are the water based activities in the Lower Zambezi. Drifting slowly down river, observing elephants coming into drink as the sun goes down is one of the definitive African experiences.

  • Night drives

With night drives offered in all of the major national parks, Zambia is arguably the best destination in Africa to observe nocturnal wildlife. The South Luangwa in particular is known for outstanding leopard sightings, and there is a tangible excitement to watching how wildlife behaves after dark.

  • Victoria Falls

By any judgement Victoria Falls is an awesome force of nature. During the wet season up to 550 million litres of water cascades over the lip of the Falls each minute, offering an intensely photogenic experience. The spectacle that so bewitched David Livingstone is still equally impressive today.

  • Walking safari

With superb guides and remote wilderness, the country that invented the walking safari is still the premier walking destination on the continent. There is nothing quite like approaching elephants or buffalo on foot knowing full well that you are a mere guest in their territory.

Visit The Kafue National Park, Zambia

Kafue National Park is huge (22,000 square kilomentres), and so it's a place we recommend staying a few days. Here you can enjoy walking safaris, canoe trips, game drives and night drives.

The Kafue National Park

Zambia

At over 22,000 square kilomentres the Kafue National Park is a huge and magical wilderness.

It has tropical rivers full of hippo and crocodile, vast floodplains with herds of puku and lechwe and islands of wild fig trees where lions are found up in the branches.

In the north, the Lufupa and Lunga rivers wind through the park. Boating along these you encounter fat pods of hippos whilst the corrugated backs of crocodiles can be seen gliding silently under the overhanging trees. In the small sandy beaches elephant come to drink, along with nervous bushbuck, defassa waterbuck, kudu, eland and more.

Wildlife of Kafue National Park

Deep in the park, the Busanga Plains are a highlight. Seasonal floodplains, these immense grasslands are only accessible from June to October. Here you’ll find large herds of puku and red lechwe. Then, there are zebra, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, blue wildebeest, oribi and sable antelope. Cheetah are found stalking in the stubbly grass whilst in the wild date palms prides of lion with cubs can be found in the branches. With pairs of wattled cranes stepping carefully together and clouds of crowned cranes and openbilled storks overhead the wildlife surrounds you.

Activities

With its variety of environments visitors to the Kafue can enjoy walking safaris, gentle canoe trips, drives in open 4WD’s and night drives in search of leopard. We recommend staying for five or more days in a couple of camps to explore the different areas of the park.
