Tailor Made Holidays in Southwest China, China: Introduction

Chris Moore, North & Central Asia Specialist I love getting off the beaten track on the fabulous walks and treks of Yunnan and Deqen; exploring minority villages, monasteries and even glaciers gives you a real taste of the region.

The provinces of Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan comprise the beautiful region of Southwest China, distinguished from the rest of the country by its geographic and ethnic diversity, with strong influences from the surrounding countries and cultures.

The landscape ranges from the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the Tibetan plateau to the deep tropical rainforests of southern Yunnan; from the high, yak-grazed steppe of western Sichuan to the towering gorges of the Yangtze and the shimmering rice terraces of Longji and Yuanyang. Remote and little-visited, customs and costumes here have remained unchanged for countless generations, with the cobbled lanes of provincial towns bustling with vibrant local markets.
