Reasons To
Visit Tibet

  • Monasteries

Scattered across the country the Tibetan monasteries which survived the Chinese invasion are colourful and often breathtaking, in remote locations and dating back many hundreds of years.

  • Remote wilderness

On top of a mountain, thousands of metres above sea level, one can look out over arching peaks and open plains and not see another being for miles, save for the occasional yak herder.

  • The Lhasa Express

One of the world's truly great rail journeys, this tremendous feat of engineering enables the visitor to travel from Beijing to Lhasa on a stunning two night journey across the Tibetan Plateau.

  • Tibetan Buddhism

Fluttering prayer flags atop mountains, smoky incense and the rich clang of prayer bowls are synonymous with Tibetan Buddhism. The religion has a rich yet troubled history with the current Dalai Lama living in exile.

Tibet

From Shigatse the road returns to Lhasa or continues west, overland to Kathmandu in Nepal. The latter is a two- or three-day trip following rough but spectacular roads through the soaring Himalayas.

Cross high passes above the snowline, stopping for the night at a basic guesthouse in the small town of Tingre. On the following day’s drive to Nepal you will encounter more stunning scenery, with snow-capped mountains shimmering on every side.

Dropping down into the lush Kathmandu Valley, you then head for the twisting streets of the legendary Nepalese capital. A short detour from this route brings you to Mount Everest Base Camp, allowing unobstructed views of the world’s highest mountain as it rises majestically into the cold blue sky.
