You are here:
Burma’s long period of inaccessibility has left it relatively untouched by the outside world, with its landscapes, colourful cultures and strong beliefs all refreshingly unspoiled. Though a beautiful country, it is the genuine delight, wonder and hospitality with which travellers are greeted that keeps people coming back here time after time.
Driving south from Mandalay, you reach the former capital of Amarapura where you can visit some of the small pagodas that remain and the impressive U Bein's Bridge. Constructed in teak and nearly a mile in length it spans Taungthaman lake.
Driving 50 miles south-east of Pagan you reach the famous Mount Popa. Rising 2,000 feet out of the Irrawaddy flood plain Mount Popa is one of the most sacred sites in Burma and home to the 'nats'.
To begin your exploration of Yangon we recommend starting with a visit to the National Museum. One exhibit worth paying attention to is the glittering Lion Throne of King Thibaw, an extraordinary work of art which stands over twenty feet tall and is covered with carvings depicting scenes from Burmese mythology.
