Holiday Ideas in January: Dhow racing in the Lamu Archipelago, Kenya
A few miles off the coast of northern Kenya coast is the beautiful Lamu archipelago. The local dhows are a common sight and a great way to enjoy the island on a short cruise. What's more, each January these craft are raced by the locals which makes for a spectacular sight.
Dhow racing in the Lamu Archipelago, Kenya
At 16 kilometres long and seven kilometres wide, Lamu archipelago resembles a miniature version of Zanzibar, but it's much quieter. Things liven up in January though as this is when the annual Lamu dhow race takes place - on New Year's Day in fact.
It's an opportunity to get some great photos and is the perfect time of year to stay in Lamu. But it is worth mentioning that accommodation gets booked up more than 12 months in advance, so we'd recommend planning 18 months ahead if you want to stay over this period.
