When in Thailand, don’t point at people as this is considered offensive. Pointing at animals or inanimate objects is fine however. Quote end

When giving or receiving anything in Burma, put your left hand to your right elbow when extending your right hand. Alternatively, use both hands. This is a sign of respect. Quote end

Biography

Alex scrubbing down an elephant, Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

After starting his career in travel, Alex was distracted for a number of years by the bright lights and promise of the world of E-Commerce.

Eventually he could resist no longer and leaving pretty much everything behind and set off around the world. Some two and a half years later he returned to the UK, having spent six months travelling and volunteering in South East Asia.

His experiences (and blog) helped him secure a position at Audley Travel and within three months of returning from his round the world trip, he was on his way to Burma and Thailand again, this time to learn specifically about how Audley operate there.

In his spare time Alex enjoys walking, climbing and travel writing on his blog.

My Most Memorable Experience

North Isaan is where I first fell in love with Thailand - the beautiful countryside, tranquil temples and stupas and ultra-friendly people really affected me.

Riding somewhat aimlessly alongside the awe-inspiring Mekong on a motorbike gave me the space and time to really appreciate Thailand and start a long-term (still ongoing) mission to learn the language.

My Favourite Destination

Inle Lake, Burma

Inle Lake is a magical place where one can relax, soak up the ethnic diversity of Burma and do some wonderful trekking and cycling trips.

On and around the lake there are also hotel properties of a very high standard, so it can all be done in great comfort.

My Favourite Accommodation

Sandoway Resort, Burma

Sandoway Resort at Ngapali beach on the Bay of Bengal is a wonderfully designed hotel.

With a great pool, roomy beach front properties and a stylish restaurant and bar, you can't help but relax and feel a little spoilt.

I particularly enjoyed watching "The Last Emperor" in my own private cinema one evening, a glass of whisky at my side.
