Hotel Foresteria Baglio della Luna

Agrigento, Italy

Located a short distance outside Agrigento and around a ten-minute drive from the Valley of the Temples, the Hotel Foresteria Baglio della Luna is a modest but charming property. Built around a central courtyard, the hotel takes its name from the Sicilian word ‘baglio’, meaning fortified farmhouse, and the property’s ancient defensive tower is still in evidence today.

Most of the 27 rooms are in a converted building dating back to the 15th century, with views of the courtyard or surrounding countryside. The terraced gardens afford views across the countryside toward the temples in the distance, and the courtyard is lined with pots of geraniums, olive trees and a small babbling fountain.

OUR OPINION:

We consider the Hotel Foresteria Baglio della Luna to be one of Agrigento’s most charming options. A relatively modest property, its historic surroundings and friendly character make it a wonderful base for exploring the Valley of the Temples.

Rooms

The majority of the 27 rooms are situated in a converted building dating back to the 15th century. The rooms are simple but furnished in a classic, contemporary style and offer beautiful views over the courtyard or surrounding countryside. Most contain showers, but there are a couple with bathtubs that are available on request. For something particularly special, there are three rooms located within the ancient tower that are accessed by the original spiral staircase. These rooms boast a number of wonderful antiques and are finished in a more historical style with period features, along with modern bathrooms.

Location

Just a ten-minute drive from Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, Hotel Foresteria Baglio della Luna is surrounded by picturesque countryside that slopes down toward the main temple complex. You can even make out a couple of the temples in the distance from the hotel’s peaceful terraced gardens.

Food and drink

Breakfast is a pleasant buffet affair, served each morning in a large glass-sided room overlooking the gardens, with the Valley of the Temples in the distance. Dinner features a menu of hearty seasonal fare and is served in the gardens in the summer months.

Facilities and activities

While the hotel doesn’t have its own swimming pool, there is a large outdoor Jacuzzi located in the gardens, surrounded by loungers. The extensive gardens provide plenty of space for children as well as offering many secluded spots in which to relax and enjoy the beautiful views.

Accessibility

It’s important to note that there's no elevator access in either section of the property, but the hotel has ground-floor rooms.
