Moai at Ahu Akivi

Ahu Akivi

Moai at Ahu Akivi

This half day excursion takes you to visit a site with three Tahai ceremonial platforms, all of which were restored in 1974. These are Ko Te Riku (this is the only moai with eyes), Tahai, and Vai Ure. Here we can also see the remains of a houseboat, a house of stone and a jetty built from rocks.

You will then continue to Ahu Akivi, which is a row of seven restored statues — according to legend, they represent the first explorers who arrived in Rapa Nui, sent by King Hotu Matua. Finally you will visit Puna Pau quarry, which is the only source of the red stone used to make the Pukau, or topknots, of the moai.
