Luang Say Lodge, Pakbeng, Laos
Indochina is criss-crossed with rivers and it would be a shame not to include a boat journey somewhere in your itinerary.
The perfect way to enter Laos is on the Luang Say cruise from the Thai border down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang. Another option in Laos is to take the two-night Wat Phou Cruise through Southern Laos. This stops at the temple of Wat Phou as well as exploring the 4,000 Islands.
From Siem Reap in Cambodia, you can take a seven-night cruise on the R/V Mekong Pandaw, which takes you across the Tonle Sap lake and over the border to Saigon in Vietnam. Another Cambodian option is the Toum Teav, which makes the journey between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh on a regular basis, but also has some longer cruises going all the way to Saigon. The Bassac boat offers overnight cruises on the Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam, and there are other smaller boats available for exploring this area.
Day trips can be taken on the Perfume River in Hue to visit the Emperor’s tombs, and there are also overnight trips on Halong Bay in Northern Vietnam.
One of the best ways to enter Laos is by river from the Thai border. The journey takes you through surprisingly varied scenery, from remote 6,000 foot mountains to lunar rock faces and sandbanks.
This sympathetically converted rice barge cruises between Pakse and the Four Thousand Islands area of southern Laos.
A beautifully crafted wooden boat, the R/V Bassac offers comfortable twin cabins with en suite bathrooms, a sun deck and a superb restaurant with bar.
This fine replica of an original 1920s river steamer has teak-lined twin cabins, all with air-con, en-suite shower and bathroom.
