Half Day Island in the Sky 4x4 Tour

This Island in the Sky excursion gives you a completely different taste of the wild canyonlands landscapes, taking you to the top of a lofty mesa to look down into the tangle of canyons through which the Green and Colorado rivers flow.

The interior of the park will be explored on a 112-mile four-wheel drive loop that winds through the vast backcountry. This half-day expedition gets you out to see the spectacular wide-open spaces of Canyonlands National Park and the trip includes stops to peer into the Colorado River corridor, a portion of the White Rim Trail and an exciting drive under a fallen boulder.

You will also stop at one of the area's largest concentrations of prehistoric American Indian rock drawings. Further on you will see Jug Handle Arch where careful explorers will spot more ancient Indian petroglyphs.

The off-road tour then winds through a spectacular landscape with towering rocks, wide-open spaces and deep canyons. Stand 400 feet above the Colorado River at Thelma and Louise Point where the two characters roared off the cliff in the well-known film before beginning your slow drive out of the park through the steep switchbacks of Shafer Trail, an historic cattle and mining road, climbing a 1,200-foot section of cliff.

Please note, a $5.00 per person National Park entrance fee is payable locally.
