  • Take a ferry trip across to Rottnest Island before hiring a bicycle to explore. When Dutch settlers first turned up here they thought the furry quokka inhabitants were giant rats, naming the island the Dutch for rat's nest; in fact the quokkas look more like fun size kangaroos and are extremely cute. There are many beautiful beaches here and you will probably leave wishing where you live had an offshore island quite so pretty.
