New Hotel

Athens, Greece

A visionary take on creating something new from the vestiges of something old, the New Hotel is the brainchild of Brazilian design influencers, the Campana brothers. The brothers are renowned for transforming everyday objects into artworks and their innovative design concept takes salvaged furniture, fixtures and fittings from the previous hotel that occupied the site and reuses them in an avant-garde fashion.

Areas of the reception and bar are completely covered in the deconstructed furniture from the previous hotel. Chairs are artfully draped with patchwork leather from their predecessors. Unusual, custom-made furniture sits alongside mismatched chairs and subtle nods to Greek culture appear everywhere. The hotel has a very tactile esthetic and there is always something unusual to look at or touch.

Although the 79 rooms are designed in a similar style, their decor is toned down and made calmer with a deceptively simple style that features a host of interesting details. While some rooms are snug, they are bright, stylish and offer all modern amenities.

The hotel also has a spa, fitness room and two restaurants: the main restaurant, New Taste, which also serves as the breakfast room, and the Art Lounge roof bar and restaurant which offers views over the city and the Acropolis.

OUR OPINION:

New Hotel gives guests a hotel experience they won’t soon forget and is suited to those seeking a unique, arty option that still provides luxury and comfort for a stay in Athens.

Rooms

In keeping with the design of the rest of the hotel, the 79 rooms have a fun, modern character but are calmer and less quirky than some of the public areas. Rooms follow one of three themes and feature historic postcards of Athens, a Grecian evil eye motif, or traditional Karagiozis shadow puppets. Handmade furniture, contemporary artworks and feature lamps ensure individual character while, in many rooms, a gold faceted, fiberglass sink sits behind a mirror which breaks up the space between the bedroom and the bathroom. Many rooms have their own balcony and all have complimentary Wi-Fi, smart TV and soundproofing.

Location

The New Hotel is located in the Plaka district of Athens. Syntagma Square is a five-minute walk away, and the National Gardens are just one street down from the hotel. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping opportunities within walking distance.

Food and drink

There are two restaurant options. New Taste on the ground floor with its mismatched chairs and walls covered in a blanket of deconstructed furniture continues the hotel’s edgy design concept and serves creative takes on Mediterranean cuisine throughout the day as well as a buffet breakfast in the mornings. The Art Lounge restaurant and bar is located on the top floor where guests can enjoy Mediterranean dishes and great cocktails as well as sweeping views out over the city and the Acropolis.

Facilities and activities

A 24-hour fitness room as well as a steam room and a Jacuzzi are available in the spa which also offers a wide range of treatments, massages and therapies.
