Honduras travel advice

Practical Information

Honduras is a peaceful and friendly country that offers relatively straightforward travel in the main.

However, economically it is poor and the mountainous interior has minimal road structure so much of the country is still waiting to be discovered, which our specialists are keen to do as it opens up.

Getting around

We can recommend a variety of routes around the country traveling by road and air to suit your needs, and our local guides’ expert knowledge will make your trip an even more rewarding experience.

Combining Honduras with Guatemala

Honduras is a fabulous country to visit in its own right, especially for divers and snorkelers, but is often and easily combined as an overland trip with neighboring Guatemala.

Language

Spanish is the national language but English is widely spoken, particularly in the tourist areas. However it is always useful to know a few key Spanish phrases.

Food and drink

Honduras does have some specialities that are worth trying. 'Anafre' is a fondue style dish of cheese, beans or meat and 'tapado' is a rich vegetable stew that meat and fish can be added to. Along the north coast of Honduras there is a distinct Caribbean influence to the cuisine with more fish included in menus and coconut bread being served with most meals.

Money

The national currency of Honduras is the lempira (L). If you have traveler's checks then there are a number of national banks across Honduras that will happily change them, with American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook being the most widely accepted. When changing traveler's checks banks will often ask to see proof of purchase. Using credit and debit cards in Honduras can be a problem. Visa credit and debit cards are the most widely accepted.

Tipping

Tipping for good service is an accepted fact. It is common to be expected to tip the service you receive whilst eating in a restaurant also. A tip of around 10% is acceptable for good service.
