Mount Washington Cog Railway

Mount Washington was named for George Washington before he became president and, at 6,288 feet, is the tallest mountain in the Presidential Range.

The mountain has a notorious microclimate and the weather station at its summit recorded the world's highest wind speed here in 1934 — 231 mph!

In 1869 the Mount Washington Cog Railway was completed and today visitors can, weather permitting, take the coal-fired train, or a newer, eco-friendly train, to the mountain's summit. This thrilling trip rewards all passengers with magnificent mountain views.

At the top, you can tour the Mount Washington Weather Observatory before making your descent.
