Visit Kununurra, Australia

The name 'Kununurra' means 'meeting of big waters' in the language of the local Aboriginal people, and the town itself was established alongside Lake Kununurra on the Ord River, as the center of the massive Ord River Irrigation Scheme.

To the south, Lake Argyle was created by the damming of the Ord River, and is now the largest body of fresh water in Australia.

Around Kununurra

Mirima National Park, only 2km from town is a wonderful area of rugged sedimentary formations, steep gorges and great views, known by the locals as the 'mini-Bungles'.

A striking feature of this Park are the boab trees which cling to the rock faces. In town there are various local art galleries, or you can take a tour of the only licensed distillery in Western Australia at the Hoochery Distillery - a traditional old Country and Western Saloon Bar 12km north of the township.

You may also like to pay a visit to Kimberley fine diamonds, located in the heart of town where you can purchase the rare pink diamonds which are mined out at the nearby Argyle diamond mine.
