The Thief

Oslo, Norway

Arguably the most sumptuous hotel in Norway, The Thief is a chic boutique located in a fashionable district just a brief walk from all of Oslo’s major attractions. The unusual name stems from its location on the islet of Tjuvholmen (‘Thief Island’), once an enclave for the scoundrels and smugglers who frequented Oslo’s waterfront.

Rooms and suites are modern and stylish, with clean, cool-gray decor accented by the occasional pop of daffodil yellow or ruby red, as well as an extensive collection of original modern art. You’ll find floor-to-ceiling windows in all the rooms, and most enjoy a private balcony where you can take in the waterfront view.

The hotel’s Thief Foodbar serves a hearty menu, and there’s a popular bar, but there are ample restaurants within a very short walk of the hotel if you want to try something else. You can also indulge in a beauty or wellness treatment at the spa or hammam.

OUR OPINION:

With waterfront views, luxe amenities and one of the best locations in Oslo, this is one of our top choices for visiting the city. We particularly appreciate how walkable everything is from here.

Rooms

Spanning over nine categories, the 119 rooms and suites were designed with a clean, modern style and thoughtful attention to detail. You’ll find a cool-gray palette throughout, enlivened by bold accent walls, pops of jewel tones and pieces drawn from the founder’s extensive modern-art collection. There are also living plants, deep-pile carpets and a veritable riot of bed pillows, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

All the rooms have king-sized beds, large bathrooms with rainforest showers, and floor-to-ceiling windows, to flood the rooms with light. Many offer private balconies, where you can sit to admire views over the water.
