Hotel Marqués de Riscal

Hotel Marqués de Riscal

Featuring a free-form exterior design by Frank Gehry, the twisting aluminium panels of the Hotel Marqués de Riscal reflect the shades of La Rioja – purple to represent the region’s wine, silver for the wire mesh that wraps around the cork and gold for the foil that covers the bottles. Beneath the imaginative façade lies a hotel with a sense of unassuming luxury, boasting simple yet modern decor and panoramic views of the surrounding region.

The 43 Gehry-designed rooms are decorated in soft natural tones of white, red and brown, with smooth wood accents on doors and windows. They offer plenty of modern comfort with amenities including air conditioning, TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi. Some offer views onto the vineyards, while others look to nearby Elciego and the mountains beyond.

In addition to an expansive spa with hammam, a pool, treatment rooms and more, the hotel also offers impressive dining options. The Marqués de Riscal restaurant holds a Michelin star and offers tasting menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as an impeccable wine list. If you’re looking to explore, the main town of Elciego is about a five minute walk away, or you can borrow a bike from the hotel to ride around the vineyards.

The 43 rooms are divided into two wings, the Frank Gehry wing, with deconstructivist twists like angled walls and scrunched lamps, and the Spa wing, which is more standard in structure but still features elements of Gehry's design. All rooms offer pared-back, contemporary decor with warm woods and deep reds contrasting with white linens. Spa rooms look onto the main hotel’s rippling façade and its surrounding vineyards, while the Frank Gehry rooms have views of Elciego and the mountains behind it. All rooms offer modern comforts such as free Wi-Fi, TVs and air conditioning.

Two hours south of San Sebastián and just 30 minutes from Logroño, the provincial capital, the hotel is set next to the atmospheric medieval town of Elciego which is only a five minute walk away. Guests are free to explore the vineyards that surrounded the hotel on bikes that can be borrowed from reception.

Food and drink

The hotel’s main restaurant, Marqués de Riscal, holds one Michelin star and serves a choice of tasting menus featuring fresh, local cuisine, and wine from the restaurant’s own vineyard as well as over 200 international labels. The 1860 Tradición restaurant serves à la carte meals in addition to tasting menus, while there is a relaxing wine bar just off the lobby. The roof also features a lounge library, where you can relax with coffee or a cocktail and enjoy vineyard views.

Facilities and activities

The immense spa complex at the hotel offers an extensive range of treatments, many of which are designed around viniculture, from body and facial treatments to pampering massages. Beyond the relaxing treatments guests can also make use of the heated indoor pool, hammam, sauna and Jacuzzi. There is also a 24-hour gym for guests who would like to stay active.

All of the hotel’s public areas, including the spa, fitness suite and winery are wheelchair accessible. There is also one room that has been specially outfitted to be accessible to guests with mobility issues.
