Hotel Marqués de Riscal

La Rioja, Spain

Featuring a free-form exterior design by Frank Gehry, the twisting aluminium panels of the Hotel Marqués de Riscal reflect the shades of La Rioja — purple to represent the region’s wine, silver for the wire mesh that wraps around the cork and gold for the foil that covers the bottles. Beneath the imaginative façade lies a hotel with a sense of unassuming luxury, boasting simple yet modern decor and panoramic views of the surrounding region.

The 43 Gehry-designed rooms are decorated in soft natural tones of white, red and brown, with smooth wood accents on doors and windows. They offer plenty of modern comfort with amenities including air conditioning, TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi. Some offer views onto the vineyards, while others look to nearby Elciego and the mountains beyond.

In addition to an expansive spa with hammam, a pool, treatment rooms and more, the hotel also offers impressive dining options. The Marqués de Riscal restaurant holds a Michelin star and offers tasting menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as an impeccable wine list. If you’re looking to explore, the main town of Elciego is about a five-minute walk away, or you can borrow a bike from the hotel to ride around the vineyards.

OUR OPINION:

An almost otherworldly sight perched within the surrounding vineyards, we find the futuristic Hotel Marqués de Riscal seamlessly blends modern conceptual style and relaxing comfort.

Rooms

The 43 rooms are divided into two wings, the Frank Gehry wing, with deconstructivist twists like angled walls and scrunched lamps, and the Spa wing, which is more standard in structure but still features elements of Gehry's design. All rooms offer pared-back, contemporary decor with warm woods and deep reds contrasting with white linens. Spa rooms look onto the main hotel’s rippling façade and its surrounding vineyards, while the Frank Gehry rooms have views of Elciego and the mountains behind it. All rooms offer modern comforts such as free Wi-Fi, TVs and air conditioning.
