Rising out of the undulating, remote dunes of the Liwa Desert, Qasr Al Sarab is a palatial sandstone resort with a design that exemplifies the region’s heritage. Mud-brick buildings rise from the landscape, crowned with crenated tops and ornate turrets. The grounds form an oasis of sophistication, with palm trees and verdant desert planting that brings a green contrast to the surrounding wilderness, while fountains and pools offset the arid background.
Internally, the windows frame the ever-shifting sands of the desert, capturing glimpses of passing camel trains, native gazelles, and wide-open blue skies. The decor echoes the landscape’s neutral tones, with traditional handiworks, woven rugs, and carved feature walls offering pops of regal vibrancy. At night, archways and pools twinkle with the lights from strings of lanterns, while campfires flicker into the night sky as Bedouin-style camps serve desert feasts.
Here, sand-based adventures prevail, with everything from dune bashing to camel riding, fatbiking to archery, and desert camps to stargazing on offer. While the resort’s Ezba Cultural Village enables you to appreciate aspects of Bedouin heritage, including Sadu weaving, henna art, falconry, Saluki hunting dog displays, and Middle Eastern cooking classes.
There is little comparable to a stay here, utterly immersed in luxury yet surrounded by the vastness of the desert. We recommend camel riding at sunset when the dunes reflect the sky of burnt ochre.
