Meaning “paradise” in the traditional language of the Butchulla people, few places live up to their name quite so effortlessly as K’gari. Forming the world’s largest sand island, here, towering rainforests grow from golden dunes, crystal-clear lakes shimmer on powder-white shores, and vast beaches stretch seemingly without end.
With few signs of modern development, wildlife is abundant on the island, from dingoes that patrol the beaches to wallabies that graze in forest clearings, turtles that nest in the sands, and migratory birds that soar above. Offshore is just as eclectic. Dolphins, dugongs, and seasonal humpback whales frequent the surrounding waters, while nearby Hervey Bay, just across the Great Sandy Strait, is recognised as one of the world's first Whale Heritage Sites.
Plus, K’gari’s diversity doesn’t stop with its wildlife. The island's ever-changing palette of white silica sands, deep blue ocean, emerald rainforest, and freshwater lakes makes every corner feel distinct — and you can experience these landscapes by 4x4, on foot, by boat, or from the air.
Explore the Island
Many of K'gari's definitive experiences are found along its eastern shoreline. You can walk among shifting sand dunes, float down the crystal-clear waters of Eli Creek, relax in the Champagne Pools, or follow Seventy-Five Mile Beach past the famous Maheno Shipwreck. Then, inland, you’ll find rainforest tracks reveal hidden lakes and sky-scraping satinay trees, landscapes that seem almost impossible on an island formed entirely from sand.
You can reach K'gari from Hervey Bay by vehicle or passenger ferry, while scenic flights by plane or helicopter offer you an aerial perspective of the island's beaches, lakes, and dune systems.
