Matangi Island Resort
Matangi is a privately owned island and a relaxed, informal resort. The resort is made up of eight luxurious bures (traditional Fijian wooden cabins), three treehouses with their own private Jacuzzis, and a two-bedroom villa that’s ideal if you’re looking for even more privacy.
The island is located very near some of the best dive sites in the world, and the resort provides equipment and courses for divers of all abilities.
There are plenty of activities on offer at the resort, while Taveuni Island is only a short distance away by boat. It has walking trails that wander amid rampant tropical vegetation and some of Fiji’s best beaches.

The property has ocean-view, treehouse, and beachfront bures decorated in traditional Fijian designs with fresh white linens. The resort’s focus is on switching off, relaxing and enjoying the natural environment, so there’s no TV, phones or Wi-Fi in the rooms. But, rooms do have all the other standard amenities you would expect, including air conditioning, king sized-beds, a private veranda/patio, and in-room safes.
Matangi Private Island Resort sits on a small, secluded island in northeastern Fiji. It overlooks a white-sand beach with views over surrounding islands such as Qamea, and has a house reef directly offshore. Horseshoe Bay — an isolated bay with a protected shoreline and bright turquoise water on the western coast of Matangi Island — can be reached by boat.
Food and Drink
There’s one restaurant at Matangi Private Island Resort and all meals are served here. It offers great-quality food with Fijian-influenced ingredients such as fresh fish, taro (a root vegetable), and breadfruit. The dining room is situated at the heart of the resort and it has 270-degree views of the sandy beach and ocean.
This is an adults-only resort.
Facilities and Activities
A range of activities are included in your stay, from catamaran sailing and paddle boarding to fishing, kayaking and walking tours around the island.
The resort’s pool sits in the middle of the resort, overlooking the beach. You can wade out from the beach and go snorkeling on the house reef.
You can also take a private boat trip to Horseshoe Bay.
For us, Matangi encompasses everything that’s quintessentially Fijian: great beaches, crystal-clear waters and warm hospitality. An added bonus, in our book, is the resort’s proximity to fringing reefs — they make for some particularly excellent snorkeling.

Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favorite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can’t be bettered.
Qamea is a traditionally built resort that feels authentically Fijian, yet it also has many modern touches. Its activities include kayaking and paddle boarding, but staying here is also about simply relaxing and enjoying the resort’s beach and rainforest setting.
Taveuni Island Resort is ideal if you’re looking for somewhere principally to relax, but you’re also interested in diving. The property has panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding rainforest.
