Set above the small town of Hveragerði on the banks of the Varmá River, this stylish and welcoming boutique hotel is just a 40-minute drive from Reykjavík.

There are 22 rooms, all of which feature contemporary Nordic decor, laminate flooring, earthy hues with bright soft furnishings, and artworks from local Icelandic artists. There’s also a wealth of modern amenities, including flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, and tea and coffee-making facilities.

Elsewhere, you’ll find two hot tubs, a sauna, a heated swimming pool for year-round use, and an honesty bar for helping yourself to wine and spirits. You’re spoiled further with a conservatory style restaurant that serves Icelandic cuisine and offers views of the river and the scenic surrounds. This hotel is ideal for those who like the outdoors and want to spend time walking, hiking, discovering volcanic hot springs and hidden geothermal pools, and swimming or fishing in the Varmá River.

Rooms

Available in six categories, the 22 contemporary style rooms all have white walls, earthy hues, bright soft furnishings, and laminate wooden flooring. There’s also flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities, and en suite bathrooms. All rooms have hair dryers, bathrobes, and slippers. Some also have balconies for soaking up views over the river, the hot springs, and Mount Reykjafell in the distance.

Location

You’ll be staying Hveragerði, the small and peaceful town cherished by walkers and outdoors enthusiasts for its hiking trails, woodlands, geothermal park, and numerous hot springs. You’ll also have the Varmá River on your doorstep if you want to swim or fish for trout. The capital of Reykjavík is 45 km (28 miles) west of the hotel.

Food and drink

One of only a handful of kitchens that preserves the practice of Icelandic geothermal cooking by preparing dishes in the steam from hot springs, Restaurant Varmá offers regional cuisine created with fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients. Guests can enjoy breakfasts and dinner in a conservatory style space overlooking the river. There’s also an honesty bar in the communal lounge.

Facilities and activities

Guests who want to unwind after long days of sightseeing will enjoy the hotel’s geothermal bathing facilities, including a sauna, outdoor swimming pool, and riverside hot tubs. The staff will be happy to suggest activities and lesser-known attractions available nearby, including visiting the hills of Reykjadalur where you can take a relaxing dip in the natural hot pools.
